100th Post!!! (and 1st Giveaway!!!)

Well, here we are at last!!!!

(cue the confetti/balloons/streamers)

100 posts in just over 100 days!!!

When I first started this blog, back at the end of May, I thought that it was, well, kind of silly.  A dear friend of mine suggested one day that I should add a cooking blog to my little wimpy site, so that people could see the food that I prepare. I thought for sure that no one could possibly be interested in what, if anything, that I might have to say about food. But, I figured what was the worst that could happen. So I set about photographing and posting the food that I was making, hoping that a few of my close friends might actually one day read it. What I have found, instead, is a whole community of talented, passionate, foodie friends, and many wonderful new opportunities. I have been so deeply touched and humbled by all of the support and positive feedback that I have received over the last three months. I want to thank all of you who take the time out of your busy lives to stop by every now and then to see what kind of trouble I’m stirring up in the kitchen. If you have discovered a new recipe, learned a new skill, or found even a little bit of kitchen inspiration then I have succeeded.

And this is only the beginning! Food is my passion (read: crazy obsession), and this blog has been a source of tremendous inspiration for me, and has provided me with a great deal of personal satisfaction. Thank you all for your encouragement, kind words of advice, and pretending to listen even long after I simply could not shut up about food.

In order to show my gratitude. . . I am proud to announce Jacob’s Kitchen’s very first giveaway!!!  That’s right folks. One lucky reader will win a $50 gift card to Williams-Sonoma!!!!!!!!!! (Good for both in store and online purchases!) I can spend hours in Williams-Sonoma fantasizing about their specialty foods, coveting their serving-ware, and admiring their gorgeous little kitchen implements. They really are the crème de la crème of cookery. And my hope is that whoever wins this gift card will find it helpful in furthering their kitchen arsenal.

  39. Love pesto and your pics from that post were superb. Also loved the vanilla-caramel sauce post, but if I were to have to choose my ultimate favorite, it would have to be the gooseberry jam because I have an great-uncle who is a gooseberry fanatic. I would love to make this for him!

  40. I think my favorite were the peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies, just because they’re peanut butter and chocolate chunk

    • Hey H.C.,

      Thanks so much. =)
I knew nothing about my camera or photographing food a little more than three months ago. (which isn’t to say that I know much more than nothing now, lol) It has been a fun adventure experimenting with my camera, taking lots of pictures, and learning all that I can. And while my pictures are certainly not as good as many of the food bloggers out there, they are definitely a lot better than once they were. Thanks for stopping by! =)

  48. Congrats on 100! I think we started around the same time as you and we will be hitting 100 Friday! I think those smores brownies are my favorite, but just for today, I shall have a new one next time! Your photos are great, I’m still learning, but I too am loving the journey! 63. hungry cook

jacob, your blog constantly impresses me and makes me hungry. i love many of your posts, but recently i was most intrigued at your discussion of hard-boiled eggs. i’ve also found that pastured CSA eggs ARE harder to peel. what to do.
i also really loved the post about stuffed cucumbers!! i literally went into my kitchen and dipped some cukes in cream cheese, unsatisfactorily, as you might imagine. keep up the fabulousness. ❤

  64. hungry cook

  86. cake balls. all about ’em. 🙂 and i always think everyone should make more ice cream. life is too short to waste it on store bought ice cream.

  94. Kelley

I am just back from a year in Burundi (East Africa) and am thrilled to have discovered your blog! I love the simplicity of the recent post, salted vanilla caramel sauce over an orange. Salt, vanilla, caramel – what is not to love! But I loved the idea of pouring over something as simple and ubiquitous as an ordinary orange and elevating it! Fresh approached to citrus is always a pleasant surprise and culinary addition! Congrats on 100!

  95. stacey lindsay

I wish I could narrow my favorites list down to just give you one…what I really love is the back story you tell with each post and the delicious photography!

  100. I am loving those stuffed cucumbers!

  101. I see your posts all the time on the Foodbuzz Top 9 and I think that my favourite post of yours is the Creme Brulee. Those photos are so mouthwatering!

  102. I’m also now following you on twitter.

  103. Congratulations! All of your food always looks beautiful and delicious, but I think the Baklava Bites were my favorite. I guess it’s the Greek in me, but I am always a sucker for any kind of baklava 🙂

I can’t wait to try the blueberry crumb cake. I added lemon zest to my own blueberry cake recipe that I made for my daughter’s 1st birthday. I think this crumb cake with lemon & ginger added sounds fab. I also follow you on FB. If I were to ask for anything on this site it would be to occasionally cater to those of us who have 3 children, work, etc… I like good ideas for thrown together vegetarian staples.

  123. Tam

    Congrats on your 100th post!

I love all your summer fruit recipes!

  124. Darbie

ok, heres something that would be fun to see…..you show up ‘unannounced’ at a readers house, and then help them make an awesome meal from things they have in their kitchen already. You can blog/tweet as you go, and take pictures, and then post about the whole thing. And when I say ‘readers’ I mean me haha

  128. Your cucumber cups look positively delicious!

  129. Hi, Whiz Kid and fellow Oregonian! You have the knack… giving us something we want/need/could use, rather than lifeless posts. For knowing zip, your photos started out stunning and have only gotten better. Have you found Lottie + Doof? I think that you may have some similar stylistic leanings, which in my book is a high compliment.

Many of your posts have been stellar, but I have to say that roasted fig panna cotta knocked my socks off.

Keep up the good work! Hope this takes you where you want to go!

  130. I’m following you on Twitter, now as well! My best, Pam

  135. OHH an how could I forget?? Entry #4…my favorite recipe so far? It is hard to choose, but the “Old Fashioned Berry Shortcakes” really strikes a cord with me. I love shortcake, and your tip of making them in advance & refrigerating for up to 5 days is great.

  142. Jacob,

I just started reading your blog as I discovered and joined Foodbuzz this week! What a fantastic treat for the eyes, this is so inspiring.

Giveaway or no giveaway, I simply wanted to say hi and I will definitely not delete the posts that come in my inbox from you… I also added you to my rss feed.

Your orange peels are gorgeous and I will surely give your grape and rosemary foccacia a try. Long live your kitchen.

    Marysol

  143. Caroline Marsden

It would be REALLY helpful if each recipe were paired other recipes for a “proposed” full menu > it is always difficult for me to find side recipes (veggies, drinks, bread, whatever) that balance/compliment the flavors of a great entree when that entree is not a meal by itself. I need the larger picture. (Definitely a $50 idea, don’t you think?) lol

  144. It’s quite challenging to decide which of your recipes is my favorite because they all look amazing. Since you’re forcing me to choose just one, I’ll have to go with the Fried Risotto Balls.

Long ago, I had an Executive Chef tell me I would never be good enough to make risotto. Until a few months ago, I believed him. Then, I decided I was going to conquer risotto if I had to spend a year in the kitchen. My first batch was perfect! Now, I make risotto every chance I get. I tried the fried risotto balls and they were divine and offered a really unique twist on this classic dish.

Thank you very much for sharing your culinary delights and thanks to your friend for nudging you into food blogging. Congrats on your 100th post! I look forward to 1,000 more.

  145. Love those good looking zucchini pancakes! Yum! Can you suggest a binder that is egg free?

    • Hey Carmela!

Great question. I would have to do some experimenting to know for sure… But some common substitutes in recipes such as these would be whipped tofu (1/4 cup per egg) or flax seed goo (which you get by adding boiling water to whole or ground flax seeds…substituting 1/4 cup per egg). Though in a recipe like this, you might be able to get away with using a little more flour (or some potato starch or arrow root, so it doesn’t get too gluey), and a splash of liquid (milk, soy milk, water, oil, etc) and leaving out the eggs entirely. The resulting “batter” for these cakes, even with eggs, is pretty loose. You could even add a grated potato to the mix, a little flour/starch, and a splash of milk, and I can imagine that they would hold together nicely. I really do need to get to work on coming up with vegan/eggless/gluten free recipes. I do get requests all of the time for them. Thanks for the reminder! =)

And thanks for stopping by! =)

  146. Kelly

Loving he zucchini pancakes! Made them tonight for dinner, and everybody loved them.

  156. Karen

I just found your site through one of my friends on twitter, and I sure am glad that I did. Your photos are GORGEOUS. Why does my food never turn out looking that good? I have scrolled through some of your recipes and they are all beautifully presented, and all sound incredibly delectable. My favorites so far would have to be your s’more brownies (of course) and your grape and rosemary focaccia. I just subscribed via email… and will definitely be following your posts in the future. Congrats on 100 posts!

  157. I have hit about my 50th post or so, but only my closest of family and friends read it. I find your blog inspiring.

+1 I read your RSS feed on google reader.

  161. Hey Jacob…you’re recipes are always so stunning, it is really difficult to pick a favorite post! I feel like I’m slighting the others to single out one but if I must…those amazing carrot cake pops…A-dorable (with a capitol A!) Were I on twitter, I would follow you but I only do face book and you’re aleady on my fave pages there.

  162. Congratulations on your success.

I stumbled on this site quite by accident yesterday when my search engine pulled up one of your blog posts. I had just started my own food blog a few weeks ago and had been looking for a way to gain more followers. After looking at your blog I decided then and there to sign up. Thank you Jacob for helping me find Food Buzz.

    • Hi Gayle!

Welcome. Thanks for dropping by! I am glad you found foodbuzz. It is a great resource for bloggers, and those who enjoy reading food blogs. I hope that you find as much joy in your blogging as I have in mine.

      Happy Eating! =)

  163. Hi! I just found your blog through food buzz – and I’m planning on making the herbed eggs for a brunch very soon! So I guess that’s my favourite currently.. though I’m sure I’ll have many more to come:)

  164. Congrats on reaching a landmark! Your pictures were enough for me to give polenta another try.

  165. Love the Basil Green Goddess dressing. I’m going to have to try it- and I sympathize with the challenge of eating all of the CSA bag every week. Nothing like telling your farmer all her hard work just rotted in your fridge!
Love the zucchini pancakes too! YUMMM 🙂

  166. It is really hard to pick a favorite!!! I’m gonna go with the carrot cake balls because the visuals rock my world (I mean they are orange aren’t they!!!)

  167. I already follow you on Facebook!!!

  168. I signed up as a subscriber!
I love your cute little melon bowls. I am having the same hard time cracking mine open.

I love it all. The photos are so beautiful. So my vote goes to “plating” artistry.

  170. I have seen the same cake balls at the Saturday Market and have always wondered how they made them. I absolutely loved the post about the carrot cake balls… how genius! Definately one of my favs!! 😉

    • Hi Kelly,

I, too, first saw them at the cake ball booth at the Saturday market. And I wondered for a long time how they were made. Until stumbling onto sites like Bakarella, who have really elevated the cake ball to edible art, I assumed that the Saturday market cake ball ladies, had invented them. I was apparently very sheltered. But whatever the case, they are both charming and delicious! And a great thing to serve at parties!

      Thanks for stopping by! =)

  172. The fried risotto balls is one of my favorites. They just look perfect with the cheese melting away. Plus, what a brilliant way to use up leftover risotto!

My favorite thing so far has been the pecan bars. My boyfriend was stationed in Hawaii (he’s a Marine) and I was in Oregon, and he always went on and on about pie. Pecan pie was his favorite, but I didn’t want to try mailing a whole pie. So I saw the bars on here, and was inspired to make pecan pie bars to send him. They were delicious and he shared them with the guys in his barracks, who all loved them. Thank you for the inspiration!

  174. SALSA…and I love it green!! Thank you for sharing the Fire Roasted Tomatillo Salsa; it is delicious!!

P.S Amazing photos every time! You are a true inspiration!

  175. Hey Jacob!
Congrats on 100 posts. I am almost there myself and it sure feels good. I am also a follower of yours on FB and love seeing your new posts. Your pics always look amazing!!
My favorite recipe of the moment would have to be the zuchinni pancakes. I am not a huge fan of zuchinni, so I am always looking for new ways to use them that will give me a better appreciation of them.
I also subscribed by e-mail to your page.

    Thanks again and good luck!!
    Rachel 🙂

  176. Those easy fruit tarts are something that I definitely want to try. They look so yummy!

  177. Chocolate Bread Pudding has to be my favorite so far. AND with salted carmel sauce! COME ON! I am in my carmel obsessed period in my life so pretty much anything with caramel is going to win me over but to pair it with a beautiful chocolate bread pudding (and the photos really are beautiful) I just have to say YUM!
